The PAN-PBL: Association of Problem-Based Learning and Active Learning Methodologies is a professional association with no economic purposes, with an organizational, philanthropic, aid, promotional, recreational, and educational character, with no political or partisan nature, and with the purpose of assisting all who pursue its goals, regardless of social class, nationality, sex, race, color or religious belief.
The origins of the PAN-PBL back to the year 2000 when, supported by a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts, Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama (USA), organized the first international PBL Conference, aiming to explore the use of PBL in undergraduate learning.
At the PBL2006 International Conference in Lima, Peru, a group of conference leaders met to consider organizational strategies. The result was the Pan American Network for Problem Based Learning (or PAN-PBL). The network’s first president, who served from 2006 to 2010, was professor George Watson from the University of Delaware. Professor David Chapman, from Samford University, was the second PAN-PBL president and served from 2010 to 2014. Professor Ulisses F. Araújo from the University of Sao Paulo has been the President since 2014.
At the PBL2016 International Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil, its ninth biennial international conference, the participants voted to turn the network into a professional association, as a worldwide organization aiming to promote educational forums for professionals representing a wide variety of positions and knowledge on Problem-Based Learning and Active Learning Methodologies, as well as to promote communication, cooperation, and scientific research for individuals and institutions.
The Association was incorporated in the State of Delaware (USA) in 2019 and has been granted a 501(c)(3) status. It is organized as a membership corporation exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, literary, or educational purposes.

Full regular or student registration in the our international annual conferences automatically includes membership dues for the following year.

The dues for new membership are $30 U.S. dollars, and the same dues as for renewing the annual membership.
